2007 Letter from the NAHA Board

Dear N.A.H.A. members and fans,

2006 brought great success for our efforts, yet many challenges through the advent of change. We are grateful through the support of our world class riders and exceptional promoters that a firm foundation and direction for unlimited growth and prosperity in our sport has been realized, as we continue to bring Professional Motorcycle Hillclimbing to mainstream America in 2007 and beyond.

2006 also brought us one of the greatest tragedies in Hillclimbing history, the serious injury of  our great friend and champion Dave Watson. The N.A.H.A. and A.M.A Pro-Hillclimb Series have had the privilege of being represented by this exceptional young man, with all the qualities and talents that only true champions ever portray. He has brought inspiration to young and old, he has competed and won against the best in the world and has set the bar for all those that aspire to be the best in our sport. We pray for Dave’s full recovery and may God bless him and his family as they tackle the most difficult hill in their lives.

Many exciting things happened in 2006 that are deserving of mention before we roll in to our 2007 program.

1)       Suzuki and Racer X came aboard as series sponsors allowing us to payout $20,000 in year end rider bonuses and pit bikes to our 700 and Open Exhibition Champions. They are grateful to be involved and will be back with the N.A.H.A. in 2007.

2)       An exciting new venue and event in Sturgis came off, bringing incredible future potential for growth and exposure to Pro Hillclimbing. We are back by request in 07 with a better venue and even greater potential.

3)       Chains and bolts came back to the delight of our fans and professional competitors. Steel on the rear wheels and fuel in the tanks is an integral part of what Pro Hillclimbing is all about.

4)       The A.M.A and N.A.H.A. came together as America’s two Pro Hillclimb Organizations and adopted the N.A.H.A rules for the 2007 season. The A.M.A Pro Hillclimb series is the oldest running and most respected in our sport. We are grateful that the vision and direction we have chosen is now being shared by this great organization.

5)       Team U.S.A. successfully defended its title and Team Canada placed third at the World Trophy in Decazeville France. The A.M.A. and N.A.H.A. were well represented with Jason Smith claiming individual World Champion honors. These affiliate events have brought incredible growth and success to our sport in Europe and will continue to bring exposure to the world.

6)       Ken Faught and Troy Scott have joined the N.A.H.A. as board members and Director’s of Marketing. Their combined efforts and shared vision with the other board members has reaped many rewards in 06 and their 07 plans are already being realized in a big way.

7)       The East West Shootout in Nashville Indiana has become a premier event for Pro Hillclimbing and our support for it as an affiliate event has enabled it to be an N.A.H.A. point’s event in 2007. The A.M.A. is considering it for a point’s event also.

8)       Amateur Hillclimb events continued to grow throughout the U.S and the World in 06. We are grateful for this growth especially in the West, as these new generations of competitors will hopefully aspire to be professionals in the N.A.H.A. and A.MA. Pro Hillclimb Series, competing against the best Hillclimbers in the World.

9)       Racer X provided a 9 page article on the World Trophy as well as website and magazine event promotion. They also sent David Pingree to our Fall Tracy event to ride and report. David is hooked on our sport and has vowed to come back in 07 to better his 12th place finish and more importantly to him, make the hill. David made more money at our N.A.H.A. Pro Hillclimb than winning the Supermoto Lites class in Long Beach!!!!!!!

So what’s new for 2007? Let’s take a look,

1)       In an effort to better support our promoters and riders, the N.A.H.A. will adopt an A.MA. Payout program that will bring 27% of the gate to purse money. There will be a $10,000 minimum purse. This program used for decades by the A.MA. Promoters allow the start up events to have some breathing room and the larger and well-established events to greater compensate the competitors. It greatly encourages all to help promote the sport and bring more fans through the gate. Based on our 2006 events and using the new format, the purse money for our 3 established and 2 new or relatively new venues would have been about the same when combined. To support our competitors in the ever escalating cost of travel to the races, our promoters will charge only for Saturday qualifying, a maximum of $75 per class. There will be no entry fees charged for making the Pro Show on Sunday. The yearly membership dues will be reduced to$90 and the one-day no points membership will be $50.

2)       10 places will be paid in the 700 and Open Exhibition classes, 40 riders in each class for the Pro Show including 5 pre qualified from the previous race.

3)       A new 450 four stroke Pro class will be introduced, rubber paddle or tire, any length, race gas only. 10 riders for the Sunday Pro Show, 3 places paid. This class has generated an enormous amount of interest with not only current competitors but also crossover riders looking for the easiest way to go hillclimbing.  Riders like Pastrana, McGrath, Metzger, Albertyn, Pingree etc. etc all have an interest to come and compete and they are in favor of this class. The future of this class could very well be X GAMES, YES, I SAID X GAMES. Ken and Troy are putting a proposal and video together for presentation to ESPN in January. With the endorsements and interest shown from the above celebrity riders and many more, N.A.H.A Pro Hillclimbing and X Games could become a near future reality!!!!!!!!!!!! The A.M.A. has also introduced this class to their Pro Series.

4)       For better alignment with other forms of Professional Motorsports the N.A.H.A. will adopt a permanent numbering system. Riders will be asked to provide a desired number, loosely based on your 2006 results. This number will be permanently displayed on all their bikes with the exception of #1 which will be reserved for the Champions if they so desire to display it. Background colors will remain the same in 700 and Open classes with the 450 Pro Class requiring black backgrounds with white numbers. You must have the correct numbers and backgrounds to compete.

5)       In the interest of safety and professionalism all competitors will be required to wear full riding gear, including, chest protector and GOGGLES. If you consider yourself a professional it only makes sense to dress accordingly, it is our obligation to our sport to make sure you do.

6)       The common displacement rules between the A.M.A. and N.A.H.A. are as follows: OPEN CLASS is now open to all size engines above 750cc.   0-700 Class is 600cc maximum on 4 cylinder nitro burners, pushrod motors can be up to 750cc, all others maximum 700cc.

7)       A Southern California event is finally reality!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With very widespread motorcycle industry support from people like Tom White (White Brothers) Bob Weber (Troy Lee Designs) Malcolm Smith, Ken Faught and many others,N.A.H.A. Professional Motorcycle Hillclimbing is coming to Southern California’s premier motorsports venue Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino California. After a Team Peterson Hillclimb exhibition during the Glen Helen A.M.A. Motocross National, the support poured in and the wheels started in motion. The final agreement, with gracious support, was made with Glen Helen management in mid December. This venue will be the most significant in the history of our sport, because of the exposure generated in the motorcycle industry’s backyard. N.A.H.A.  riders will have the great privilege of competing and displaying their talents in the largest motorsports market in the world!!!!!!!

Our promoters have worked diligently with the N.A.H.A. to provide a very distinct separation of events in an effort to support our competitors and families in their race travel, we thank them and are grateful for all they do for our sport.

We lacked communication to our riders in 2006 and we plan to change that with an N.A.H.A. newsletter after each event, and quicker web updates. Sometimes the simplest things can make all the difference, we appreciate the input and will continue to work long and hard for all our members, promoters and fans. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO REPRESENT THE BEST HILLCLIMBERS IN THE WORLD, IT IS A GREAT HONOR AND ONE WE ALL TAKE VERY SERIOUSLY, SEE YOU AT THE RACES IN 07!

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED,
